Truly a piece of BRIDGEPORTS'HISTORY THE NATHANIEL WHEELER MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN stands today yet as a reminder of past years.The fountain has a fascinating history.First of all it is registered by the US as a historic place.The fountain was erected 1912-1913.This was a gift to BRIDGEPORT from WHEELERS'children in memory of their father.MR.WHEELER was part of the WHEELER/WILSON SEWING MACHINES CO.
The fountain is located at the intersection of-FAIRFIELD-AVE,AND PARK AVE.IT.was built in 1912 1913.IT still stands today as a reminder of BACK IN THE DAY.IT had been renovated in 2009-2010 for repairs costing $199,000.
The fountain is made up of four units .The central part is the mermaid statue holding a lamp-as she rises from the granite pool structure.ALSO there are 3 other parts to this fountain.They make up water troughs.IT is located on a triangular piece of land.The fountain was created by the sculptor GUTZEN BORGLAM.
