Police ID Bridgeport Teen Who Drowned In Housatonic River Last Week

Police have determined the teen did not jump from the Glen Road bridge in Newtown, but entered the water from the shore.

NEWTOWN, CT — Police have identified the teen who drowned last week in the Housatonic River below Silver Bridge as Diogo Carvalho De Miranda, age 16, from Bridgeport.

De Miranda did not jump from the Glen Road bridge, but entered the water from the shore, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Newtown Police Department

"Preliminary investigative findings have determined that this drowning was accidental in nature and not the result of any criminal action," police said.

Newtown police were called to the area near the Southbury town line shortly before 2 p.m. last Thursday, July 27. First responders learned that the teen, who had been with a group of youths, had gone under the water beneath the bridge and not resurfaced.

Several Newtown police officers searched for the teen under the surface of the water, and were able to locate and recover the youth from under the water.

Once on shore, the De Miranda was transported to Danbury Hospital, where the Bridgeport resident died Friday morning.
