Remembering L'Ambiance Plaza

Tragic Loss of Lives

How well I remember this tragedy of L'Ambiance Plaza April 23-1987 here in Bridgeport.I left work and gathered sodas and blankets and headed for the disaster area not far from my employment. This site was projected to be the new site of L'Ambiance Plaza Complex valued at $17.5 MILLION DOLLARS so as to build a 16 story building there.

AT approximately 1;36 pm seven of the floors toppled forming a pile of debris beyond imagination. The flooring collapse caused 28 deaths of construction workers and injured 22 persons as well. There were numerous theories of why this occurred. Some say neglect of safety measures, others claim design problems or carelessness.Whatever the reason it should have not happened at all.The tragic loss of death is beyond any monetary value.

Later OSHA was called in to investigate the tragic scene. The TEXTAR COMPANY was referred to the Department OF Justice with the hopes of a prosecution of some sort.No charges were ever filed. Then quite a few lawyers were involved carrying legal action for the victims as well as their families.$41 million dollars legal settlements wrapped up the cases from the legal perspective. Now years later we have just tragic memories as we move on from this historic moment.
