WATCH: Police Officer Heralded As Hero For Stopping Runaway SUV

Bridgeport police are heralding the "superhuman" actions of a school resource officer who stopped an SUV rolling downhill with no driver.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A Bridgeport police officer is being heralded for his "superhuman" actions in stopping a runaway vehicle. On Dec. 16 at around 2:30 p.m., Carlos Carmo Jr. stopped an SUV that was rolling downhill on Boston Avenue with two individuals, one in the passenger seat and one in the back seat, but no driver.

Somehow the car slipped out of park and rolled away on a downward slope. It began rolling on a downhill slope, picking up speed as it went.

A group of Harding High School students were walking on the sidewalk near the SUV's path, The Stamford Advocate reported.

The incident was captured on tape by a security camera. In it Carmo is seen running down the driverless SUV and somehow stopping it before it hits the students.

Carmo, a four-year veteran of the department, told ABC News that he mustered all of his strength to stop the vehicle from jumping a sidewalk curb and colliding with the group of students. He grabbed onto the runaway SUV's passenger-side door to stop it.

He said he was yelling at the students on the sidewalk but they had headphones in and didn't hear him. He added that it appeared they didn't even know what was going on until the incident was over, according to ABC News.

Carmo was treated for minor injuries in the incident. No other injuries were reported.

Carmo was recognized for his heroic efforts by Mayor Joseph Ganim along with police officials. He was lauded for his "bravery, selflessness, and quick thinking" that helped avoid a potential tragedy.
