The Watermark to Host Resident Poetry Reading

Irene Backalenick to read from her recently published collection of poems

The Watermark at 3030 Park today announced it will host a poetry reading by resident Irene Backalenick. The presentation will be held on Sunday, March 19, at 3 p.m. at the retirement community, located at 3030 Park Avenue on the Bridgeport-Fairfield town line.

Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, Backalenick had a long career as a journalist and theater critic, noted for her work at the New York Times. Despite many years of writing for the media and arts, Backalenick penned her first poem two years ago, at the age of 93, after losing her husband and daughter.

“After moving to The Watermark, poetry became an outlet where I could step back and evaluate my memories, relationships, and life in general,” said Backalenick. “It has allowed me to be brutally honest while learning more about myself, too.”

During the event, Backalenick will read from her collection, “Rueful Reflections,” released in January of 2017.

“The Watermark at 3030 Park is looking forward to celebrating Irene’s talent as she shares her collection with friends, family, and poetry lovers in the greater Bridgeport and Fairfield community,” said The Watermark at 3030 Park’s Executive Director, Kristin Butler. “Her desire for new endeavors is a trait that we admire and are excited to showcase at this reading.”
