2 Arrested for Racketeering, 3 for Larceny After Alleged Scam of Elderly Residents

Danbury police said a New Milford man is accused of scamming elderly homeowners out of thousands of dollars through a driveway repair scam.

NEW MILFORD, CT-- The Danbury Police Department have arrested three people in connection with alleged fraud cases in which the scammers are paid thousands of dollars for substandard driveway repair work that was not authorized, according to a police report.

Danbury police said they received a complaint in May 2015 from a 91-year-old resident that stated he came home to find workers who told him his wife hired them to seal and resurface the driveway. The Danbury man paid them $2,750 and later learned that his wife never hired them.

Danbury Police Detectives contacted the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection and found through a joint investigation that there were eight similar cases in the area dating back to 2012. Of the eight cases, 5 victims were over the age of 60 years old, police said.

Danbury police arrested Legrande Cooper, Jr., 27, of New Milford and charged him with six counts of second degree larceny, third degree conspiracy to commit larceny, third degree larceny, two counts of failure to provide notice of cancellation, two counts of failure to register as home improvement contractor and corrupt organizations and racketeering activity violation. Cooper turned himself in to the Danbury Police Department on March 16 upon learning of the warrant. He was released on a $10,000 bond and is due in Danbury Superior Court on March 30, 2016.

Kayla Cooper, 24, of Cairo, NY was charged with three counts of second degree larceny, third degree attempted larceny, third degree conspiracy to commit larceny and corrupt organizations and racketeering activity. Kayla Cooper turned herself in to Danbury Police Department upon learning of the warrant on March 15, 2016. She was released on a court set bond of $7500 with court date of March 29, 2016.

Coty Cooper, 24, of Balston Spa, NY was charged with third degree larceny and third degree conspiracy to commit larceny. He was released on $2,500 bond and is due in court on March 30, 2016.
