Big Brothers Big Sisters Donation Center Opens in Newtown

Even though the sign still said "Coming Soon," Big Brothers Big Sisters Donation Center in Newtown got off to a good start on its first day open.

"I was only here for an hour and I got my first customer," Mike Thomas said enthusiastically.

Thomas, a resident of Ansonia, works for the local chapter of the national organization that pairs at-risk children with adult mentors. He'll be the guy who will happily help folks bring in their donations at the Newtown Center and provide them with paperwork for tax deduction purposes.

Thomas is also responsible for the center's facelift. He transformed the previously dark space into a bright, inviting atmosphere.

The center is located at 127 South Main St. (Route 25), near the restaurant Fusion 25. The space was formerly occupied by Hideaway Cafe, and before that, Blue Z Coffeehouse.

How the Process Works

Items donated to the center are delivered to nearby Savers Thrift Stores — the closest is in Brookfield, among a handful of other spots in the state — where they are sold. All profits go directly to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Items You Can Donate

According to a pamphlet provided by Thomas, items always in need include:

• clothing (men, women and children)
• shoes (all styles and sizes)
• household items (pots, pans, dishes)
• curtains, towels, bedding
• tools
• toys, games, sports equipment
• small appliances and radios
