Brookfield Bicycle Advocate Urges Residents to Speak Out

"Take 60 seconds to make roads 'friendlier' for motorists and bikes," Dave Fine, safe cycling advocate for Brookfield said.

Dave Fine, a bicyclist and advocate for safer cycling in Fairfield County, is urging residents to speak up today, Monday, Dec. 7, to make roads safer. He writes:

“The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has proposed to dramatically ease restrictive federal design standards that currently make it difficult for communities to design and build safer, more complete streets. Outdated federal guidelines are getting in the way, but FHWA is proposing to scrap many of them. This is great news, but for these changes to go ahead, FHWA needs to hear that they have strong support for the proposed changes. Today, December 7, is the final day to submit comments to the FHWA to support their proposal to simplify the outdated 13 road design criteria developed 30 years ago.

According to Safe Growth:

“The FHWA proposes removing 11 of the 13 criteria for lower-speed sections of the national highway system. According to the LAB, this proposed rule change will make it far easier for communities with NHS roads to improve those roads in implementing their own complete streets policies and bicycle-friendly goals.”
