Brookfield High School Gears Up For Relay For Life

The Relay for Life will be held at the Brookfield High School track, located at 45 Long Meadow Hill Road, on May 18 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.

BROOKFIELD, CT — Twelve teams have already registered for Brookfield High School's Relay for Life, set for May 18.

High school girls sports are generously represented for the charity event as of April 15, with relay squads from the Lady Bobcat basketball, softball, tennis and soccer teams among the dozen pledging to raise money for cancer research. The Brookfield Volunteer Fire Company is also fielding a squad, as are families and local organizations, according to the online roster sign-up.

Proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society.

The relay is less about speed than it is commitment. During the event, one person from every team will always be walking on the track, "to represent the everlasting fight that cancer patients and their caregivers endure," according to Ava Termotto, BHS American Cancer Society Club president.

There has not been a Relay for Life in Brookfield for around a decade, according to Katie Lapham a social studies teacher at Brookfield High School who advises the club. The American Cancer Society "scatters them" and arranges for "different communities to pick them up at different times," Lapham said.

One other way Brookfield residents are raising research money is through the purchase of luminaria. The bagged lights are each dedicated in honor of someone who is either fighting cancer or lost their battle, and will be on display during the Relay for Life.
