The Brookfield Library and Brookfield Theatre to Screen PBS Documentary, "The Librarians"

What happens when censorship hits your library?

The Brookfield Library and Brookfield Theatre are proud to present a free screening of the PBS documentary The Librarians on Thursday, April 30th at 6:30 p.m.

The screening and a community discussion after the film will take place at Brookfield Theatre.

Described as “first responders in the fight for democracy and the First Amendment,” librarians take center stage in this powerful film, which follows the rising wave of book bans sweeping public and school libraries nationwide. The Librarians exposes the harassment, threats, and legislation aimed at criminalizing their work—while celebrating librarians' unwavering commitment to protecting the freedom to read.

The destructive repercussions of censorship attempts are being realized in recent days, as evidenced by the firing of Tennessee library director Dr. Luanne James on March 31st. The Rutherford County Library Board voted in an 8-3 decision to fire James after demanding that 132 children’s books, deemed inappropriate for “LGBTQ+ themes, female empowerment, diversity, witches, and social justice,” be moved into the adult section of the library.

Due to limited capacity, registration is required for this program. To register online, visit: https://brookfieldlib.librarycalendar.com/event/librarians-documentary-watch-party-32021
