Brookfield Mom's Note to Kid on Her Last First Day of School

I didn’t mind

getting up at 5:30 this morning

making you breakfast

packing you a lunch

driving you to school because you forgot to get your parking spot arranged ahead of time

I didn’t mind

the drive to school

calming you down

telling you to breathe

dropping you off in a discreet spot so your friends wouldn’t see that your mom had to drive you...to run and join your friends for the senior breakfast tailgate

to which you brought the leftover cheesecake we had last night to celebrate your first day of school

i didn’t mind

racing home to snap a pic of the schedule you left behind on the kitchen table

You didn’t mind

me getting up with you

making you breakfast

packing you a lunch

jumping back out of the car because we forgot to snap your last ‘first day of school photo’ that we’ve taken every morning

for the past 13 years

on the same stoop

with the same face

I feel so blessed to support you on this journey

to be your rock

so grateful to be here for you

this last year of high school before you launch
