Brookfield Schools Announce New Residency Checks, AP Honor Roll, Algebra Credit Policy
The school board heard about the upcoming residency refresh, high school credit for middle school Algebra 1, and more at a meeting.
BROOKFIELD, CT — The Brookfield School Board received an update from Interim Superintendent Mrs. Farias on several key district initiatives and achievements. Among the updates were plans for a residency refresh, changes to high school credit for middle school Algebra 1, and recognition for Brookfield High School's Advanced Placement program.
The district will implement a Residency Refresh program for grades 3, 6, and 9. This initiative aims to verify that all students served by Brookfield Public Schools reside within the district boundaries. According to the interim superintendent, the program also ensures accurate record-keeping, which supports effective staffing and resource planning while maintaining state compliance. Communications with families regarding this refresh are expected to follow.
Eighth-grade students who achieve a grade of “C” or better in Algebra 1 will now receive high school credit for the course. This credit will appear on students’ high school transcripts in PowerSchool at the end of the first quarter of ninth grade. The course will be recorded and applied to prerequisite course sequence requirements. However, it will not be included in GPA or class rank calculations, consistent with how community service and transfer credits are recorded.

Brookfield High School earned a Silver recognition on the College Board’s AP Honor Roll for the 2024-2025 school year. This recognition acknowledges the school's success in developing an AP program that fosters a college-going culture and provides students with opportunities to earn college credit. The interim superintendent reported that 63 percent of Brookfield High School students, 142 out of 226, took at least one AP exam.
Additionally, the district will conduct a ThoughtExchange Winter survey in February. Student survey questions will be shared with parents and guardians in PDF format two weeks before the survey administration in each school. This will allow parents time to opt their child out if they choose.
