Brookfield Scouts Establish Venture Crew to Develop Leaders through Adventure

Brookfield’s former Boy Scout Troop 8 has converted to a Venture Crew and welcomes both male and female members ages 14-20 to join what has become the fastest growing program in Boys Scouts of America. Venture Crews are tailored for teenagers with an emphasis on extreme sports, high adventure, and coed involvement. With less emphasis on ceremony, uniform, and advancement, Venture Crew 8’s mission is to develop leaders through adventure.

“Our goal is to complement the existing Scout program in town by providing additional opportunities for male and female youth from the greater Danbury area,” says Venture Crew 8 Leader Jonathan Gibney. “Through high adventure activities, we hope to nurture leadership skills and self-confidence, teach reasonable risk-taking, and provide positive experiences to help young people mature and prepare to become responsible, caring, productive adults.”

For their first adventure, the Crew is preparing to become SCUBA certified this spring. “I’ve never been involved in scouting before,” said crew member Brianna Paiva, a senior at New Milford High School. “But I’ve always wanted to SCUBA dive and Venture Crew has opened a lot of doors to new challenges for me. I thought it would be hard to be the first girl, but the guys have been really great. I’ve made a lot of new friends.”
