Brookfield State Representative David Scribner kicked off Saturday's Relay for Life by thanking the chairs and the community for their hard work and dedication to the community. Thirty-five teams raised over twenty-seven thousand dollars at the event which was held at Brookfield High School. The funds benefit the American Cancer Society in their ongoing efforts to find a cure for cancer. The top fundraising team, Scooby Strong, raised over five thousand dollars.
This year's Chair was Stephanie Ferrari. The Honorary Chair was Brandon Zenevitch, a Brookfield High School student who is battling a rare form of cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). RMS is a rare subtype of sarcoma, a type of soft tissue sarcoma that begins in immature cells then spreads to other parts of the body. Scribner called Zenevitch "a true beacon of light, strength and hope."
"Not only in his own battle for his life, and for and with his family, he serves as an example to his peers, his classmates, his fellow band and guard members, and as an inspiration to our entire community," Scribner added.
Scribner said he is always honored and proud to serve "our great community of Brookfield and am never more proud than at times like this."
Calling the teams of volunteers "Brookfield's finest," Scribner said their "energy, commitment, generosity, and caring exemplifies what this community is truly about."
