Brookfield's team offense, Fitzgerald's bat, heat up on rainy, chilly Wednesday: Brookfield softball crushes Immaculate 14-0

Brookfield high school softball has had a slow start to their 2017 season. The team lost 8 seniors last year and has no senior starter for the current season. With inexperience comes a three game losing streak to start the new season. The team had two one-run, heart-breaking losses to Joel Barlow and Greenwich and in between those games they got blown out by Pomperaug earlier this week in just their third contest of a very wet season.
The team has been led by four juniors: Cara Lennon (All-Patriot Division) at shortstop; Alexandra Fitzgerald (All-Patriot Division) at third base; Alyssa Lionetti at pitcher; and Erica Morey in the outfield. Julie Coleman adds some depth and experience as a junior pitcher and first baseman.
After that it is almost all freshmen and sophomores on this roster with the exception of two utility players, Deb Fiori and G. Englund, seniors. Avery Katz (OF) and Emily Parchinksi (1B) are two freshman that have been called upon to step it up for the varsity Bobcats as the team goes into its fifth game tomorrow against Bethel. Josey Luizzi has been a starter mostly at second base and Naveah Chansouk (OF)--both sophomores. Laila Cofone is handling most of the catcher duties so far, in just her freshman year. This young team should lead to some team-building opportunities for Brookfield and their newly promoted head coach.

On Wednesday afternoon in the rain and cold, the Brookfield juniors heated it up for their first win, a double-digit blowout of the Immaculate Mustangs on the Mustang's home turf in Danbury. Clean-up hitter Alexandra Fitzgerald went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a single. She also scored twice and drove in three runs to account for over one-third of Brookfield's offensive explosion. Cara Lennon added a monster shot for a home run and RBIs of her own to ruin the already very rainy day for Immaculate pitching. The Brookfield freshman and sophomores then stepped up and added to the satisfying offensive barrage for the Bobcats (1-3), who are celebrating their first win of the young season. Alyssa Lionetti shut down the Mustangs offense to pick up a 5-inning shut out and her first win of the young season (1-3).
