Busy Night for Brookfield Fire Department

A downed tree, burning power lines and the smell of gas kept crews hopping.

BROOKFIELD, CT -- The Brookfield Fire Department was dispatched on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. to Merwin Brook Road on a report that a tree atop downed power lines was burning. Upon arrival, crews from Engine 5, Red Grass, Engine 21 and Police blocked the road and awaited Eversource crews to arrive and clear the tree from the primary lines before the flames could be extinguished.

At 9:00 p.m., fire crews were dispatched to an automatic fire alarm at 14 Candlewood Lake Road. During their response, a second call came in as a report of gas in the Barnbeck condominium complex on Federal Road. Upon arrival at Barnbeck, Red Grass and Brookfield Police began a primary investigation and determined the best course of action was to evacuate the building until the source could be located. Incoming crews from Engines 1, 21, and 5, as well as Eversource, searched floor by floor with gas meters. Fire and utility crews departed when no gas readings or smells were further detected.
