Candlewood Lake Lights-Up Another Birthday - Join in the Celebration & Purchase a Remembrance

Candlewood Lake's birthday is marked on 9/28, a time to celebrate and acquire a remembrance of Lake memories and magic

This coming Monday, 9/28, marks Candlewood Lake’s eighty-sixth birthday – a time to reflect, to recognize and honor the role the Lake has played in enriching life experiences, to respect the tenuous and dependent nature of this remarkable resource, and to celebrate its healthy longevity on this special occasion.

Conceived in the mid-1920s, the Lake ‘bowl’ was arduously plotted by over 50 surveyors swarming over the valley and mountainsides, and prepared and constructed by nearly 1,400 men drawn from here to Maine and Canada. The Lake’s creation represented a singular feat of architectural and engineering significance. However, soon its structural accomplishments gave way to kudos from other quarters. Early on the Lake was singled out by an international travel writer as the ‘8th wonder of the world,’ more recently as among New England’s ‘sweet spots,’ and proclaimed by our State Legislature on the occasion of its 80th birthday as ‘A Connecticut Crown Jewel.’

But to those who have lived and recreated here and have taken advantage of the Lake’s endless advantages, Candlewood is all that and more; indeed it is now a New England showcase, an integral part of the fabric of our region and communities as well as the DNA of each of us. So at this time of recognition and celebration take time to give thanks and to appreciate this ‘Jewel’ in our midst while being ever mindful that our Lake requires and deserves our sensitive stewardship if our offspring and theirs are to also share this gift we have had the unique honor and pleasure of experiencing firsthand.
