CT Science Center Visits HHES 2nd Graders

Elementary students Play with Polymers.

Last week, second grade scientists from (HHES) conducted several hands-on experiments in a program called Playing with Polymers. An educator from Hartford's Connecticut Science Center taught students about several different types of polymers, such as sticky, icy and flaky.

The students learned that polymers are long chains of molecules that are linked together to form specific consistencies.

They experimented with sodium polyacrolyte, the material found in diapers, and learned that it can absorb water to become 1,000 times its original size. When water was added to the polymer, it grew to resemble snow or ice. The students also tested this theory by filling a diaper with six cups of water.

Another favorite experiment included making green slime. The sticky, slimy, wet polymers kept our students' interest in making scientific observations, for sure!

The Connecticut Science Center is a great place to explore in Hartford. Please visit www.ctsciencecenter.org for more information on programs and to purchase discount museum passes.
