
All over the USA--on your TV-- FIRST Robotics will be featured in a back-to-school special that will co-hosted by Will.i.am and the Black Eyed Peas and FIRST’s Founder and inventor, Dean Kamen. The special, “i.am FIRST: Science is Rock and Roll” will air on this Sunday, Aug. 14 on ABC from 7-8pm Eastern Time. Brookfield HS has a FIRST Robotics Team #1099 named the “DiscoTechs.” The Disco Techs was part of the audience during the taping of this special at the World Championship in St. Louis, MO. FIRST Robotics Team 1099 placed in the top 100-150 teams in the world. The DiscoTechs also won the 2009 and the 2011 Boston Regional Championship and went on to the World Championship in Atlanta 2009 and St. Louis in 2011.
The DiscoTechs will be having a fundraiser the following
weekend (Friday-Sunday, Aug. 19-21) at the CT Dept. of Transportation Rest Stop just past exit 28 off I-84
eastbound. During Friday, 12-6pm and Sat and Sunday from 7:30am-6pm they will provide: free coffee, baked goods, Italian ice, fresh fruit, etc. in exchange for donations to their team. They also will be demonstrating their champion robot, “Disco-Bot.” They will also have information on the four divisions of FIRST Programs for elementary through high school students. Donations from individuals and businesses are welcome—cash/checks/products or services.

FIRST Robotics Program is involves all 50 states, plus many countries. Its purpose is twofold:
1—Help students to develop 21st century skills that all employers are looking for such as: gracious
professionalism (teamwork, leadership, problem solving, learning to work with other people, project management, meeting deadlines, working within a budget, etc.)
2—Get students interested in various careers including those that involve science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). They also provide opportunities for students interested in programming, web design, photography, public relations, marketing, creating business plans, team spirit and more.
FIRST also provides millions of dollars worth of scholarships for student participants to attend numerous colleges and universities throughout the United States.
