The Brookfield Library and the Brookfield Historical Society Co-host the Presentation “Abraham Lincoln President of the People: Perspectives from the Mason-Dixon Line”

Paula Hopewell, a native of Northern Kentucky, will deliver a lecture on Abraham Lincoln, Thursday, July 14, 2011, at 7 P.M., in the Brookfield Public Library’s community room, located at 182 Whisconier Road (Route 25). The presentation entitled Abraham Lincoln, President of the People: Perspectives from the Mason-Dixon Line, will discuss the influence the border region had on Lincoln and the sources of his extraordinary compassion, a character trait that helped him steer the country through the War Between the States.

Hopewell, a member of the Lincoln Forum, a group of scholars and enthusiasts who meet annually in Gettysburg, has lived in Brookfield since 1997. She will share her impressions of the man and as well as insights and stories she uncovered while attending Forum presentations.

The lecture is part of the “One Book One Lake 2011” summer reading program promoted by the Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford and Sherman Public Libraries. It is aimed at fostering a connection among the region’s lake communities by bringing people together through literature. This year being the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Hopewell’s talk is designed to enhance the reading of Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer-prize winning Civil War classic The Killer Angels.. Each of the participating libraries will throughout the summer offer an event to compliment the reading of Shaara’s book. Admission is free and the community is invited to attend. The event is jointly hosted by the Brookfield Library and the Brookfield Museum and Historical Society. For more information call 203 775-6241 or log onto www.brookfieldlibrary.org
