How to Find Treasure - A Tip!

The Urban Archeologist offers a tip for discovering lost valuables.

If you have ever found something you lost, even if it was just lost for five minutes, then you know the satisfaction of discovery. That feeling, though sometimes masked in relief (if it was your car keys, or your wallet), is a soul-healing moment. Finding a lost item for someone else is the penultimate state of that kind of satisfaction.

Urban Archeology, to me, is getting the opportunity to hopefully feel that way every weekend. I walk on to a stranger’s property, introduce myself, then try to look for something that interests me. All the while I am hoping that the sellers won’t think I’ve lost my marbles.

When I walked into a tag sale a few weeks back I didn’t have my hopes up, and after talking with the owners, my fears were confirmed. However, instead of believing them and their insistence that I wouldn’t find anything old enough to write about, I decided to look at it as a challenge.

When I saw the desk (image above), I knew I had struck gold. Why? If you’ve seen this style of desk, often called a secretary, then you are familiar with the nooks and crannies built-in to store papers and other bits and accessories of writing and record-keeping.

My inspection of this desk quickly revealed a piece of old paper and something more, that you can see and read all about by clicking here.
