How to: Make Your Own Skees?

122 years ago, The Urban Archeologist learns it was apparently OK to not only invent your own skis, but to spell it any way you wanted to.

If you should plan on make a trip to one of New England’s many ski trails, you could save a lot of money if you made your own skis.

This how-to article I found certainly seemed like an uncomplicated task for a young person with nothing else to do and maybe no sense of their own safety. Really though, how fast could home-made skis go?

This article combines 2 of my favorite things: A discovery of old papers, and a word I’ve never seen before now. I rarely read the articles in the old newspapers and periodicals I find, but maybe I should start.

I had actually framed this page from 122 years ago for the ads printed there. It wasn’t until I tried adjusting the frame that I read the article and really became fascinated with that word, “Skees.”
