John J. Mainhart, Sr., 83, of Brookfield, Passed Away

Burial for Mr. Mainhart will be on Monday, July 27 at 12 p.m. at Middletown Veteran Cemetery with full military honors.

John J. Mainhart, Sr., 83, of Brookfield, beloved husband of 55 years to Helen (Wampler) Mainhart, died peacefully on Saturday, July 18 th at Danbury Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born in Johnstown, PA on May 28, 1932, son of the late Carl and Geraldine (Curley) Mainhart.

Mr. Mainhart will be lovingly remembered by the countless students who passed through the halls of Brookfield High School where he taught history and was a past vice principal. He was an active parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Brookfield where he was an RCIA team member. He also lead bible study groups and was passionate about sharing his Catholic faith. He looked forward each year to attending the Men’s Retreat. He was recipient of the St. Augustine 2012 medal of service from the Diocese of Bridgeport.

In addition to his church life, he enjoyed vegetable gardening and played for many years on the team “Our Daily Bread,” for the Brookfield Men’s Softball League.

In addition to his cherished wife, Helen, he will be sadly missed by his son, John J. Mainhart, Jr.; his three daughters, Kathleen Mainhart, Karleen Weiss, and Heather Carlson; and his “daughter” Elizabeth Brady. He was lovingly known as PopPop to Ted, Calondra, and Zack Mainhart, Taylor-Lynn Weiss, Nichole and Tyler Brant, Nicholas and Michael Iannazzo. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, and in keeping with John’s love of his parish, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Joseph Church.

Funeral Information

A Mass of Christian Burial [was] celebrated on Saturday, July 25th at 10:00am at St. Joseph Church, Brookfield. Burial will be on Monday, July 27th at 12:00pm at Middletown Veteran Cemetery with full military honors.

The family will receive friends at St. Joseph Church, Brookfield, on Friday between the hours of 4:00 and 7:00pm.
