Hello Everyone.

Lets talk about Air Infiltration.

We have talked about it before….but it deserves more attention. Even if you upgrade the insulation in your attics, walls, and floors, and upgrade your heating system to natural gas, and turn down your thermostat (which are all GREAT ways to reduce your energy bill – and help the earth), if you haven’t addressed infiltration, you’re missing half the battle.

Yes, infiltration can account for 50% of your heating bills, even more.  Actually, infiltration should be the first line of attack. Once you minimize the amount of outside air entering your home, then you can concentrate keeping the heat in your home (or air conditioning in the summer).

Infiltration is a serious enemy….so where do we start the battle?

Well, the 4 largest sources of infiltration in our homes are:  ceiling penetrations (pull down steps to the attic and recessed lights), fireplaces, fans / vents, and plumbing pipes coming through walls and floors.

If we remedy these 4 areas, we have addressed 75% of the infiltration problem.  That’s right….stop or minimize the infiltration in just these 4 areas, and you have solved 75% of your infiltration issues, and can reduce your heating bill by over 35%!!  If you spend $3000 per year to heat your home, you can save $1000 PER YEAR, by fixing these areas.  Remember…the savings is per year…every year.  Where else can you get $1000 per year, tax free, for as long as you stay in your home!

Awareness is the first and most important step…be aware of these energy sieves in your home….treat them like the intruders they are….and lets get them fixed!.

In my next blog we will go into detail on how to address your biggest infiltration source -  ceiling holes.

Think energy savings every day…the earth appreciates it.
