Obituary: Dr. Vincenzo Nicholas Commercio, 81, Of Brookfield

BROOKFIELD, CT — Dr. Vincenzo Nicholas Commercio, born on Oct. 4, 1941, to Julius and Josephine Commercio, departed for peace on Feb. 13, 2023, at the age of 81.

Vincent was born and raised in New Jersey, where his parents owned a custom drapery and home decorating service. He graduated from St. Benedict’s Preparatory School and attended Fordham University School of Pharmacy. He graduated with a degree in dentistry from New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry.

Vincent was a Lieutenant in the US Navy during the Vietnam War, stationed in Norfolk, VA, and did a tour of duty on a troop transport ship.

After discharge from the Navy, he maintained a successful dental practice in Mount Kisco, NY from 1970 until 2010.

Vincent later obtained a master's in counseling from Long Island University, and concurrently practiced psychotherapy and dentistry after graduating from the Psychoanalytic Institute for Psychoanalysis.

Vincent had a big heart and an uncanny need to help others. For two years, he mentored an inner city boy as a member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters. He also ran a successful nonprofit group for people who stuttered called "Speakeasy." In all of his work, Vincent offered discounts to senior citizens and based his fees on his patients’ ability to pay.

Vincent traveled extensively with his surviving wife of 37 years. He was also a collector of many things- stamps, coins, Marilyn Monroe, music and Peanuts memorabilia- to name a few. He was an avid reader, enjoyed music and concerts, loved animals, movies, flea markets, tie-dye and Beatles shirts, and spending time with loved ones. He embraced all that life had to offer and balanced his work well with fun and adventure.

Vincent will be remembered for his sense of humor, his immensely big heart, his uniqueness and comfort in his own skin, and his ability to love deeply—amongst countless other endearing qualities.

Vincent is survived by his wife Ruth Commercio of Brookfield, his daughter Michele, son-in-law Michael Glod, and granddaughters Nadia and Sonia of Essex, VT, his daughter Nicole Commercio, her partner Michael Coppola and grandsons Kai and Kwin of Fairfield, his sisters Phyllis Forlenza and Julie Donohue, his brother-in-law Jay Donohue, his nephews Donald and Mark Forlenza and his niece Jody Sewell. And not to be forgotten- his adored dog Missy and bird, Tweety.

Friends may gather to celebrate Vincent’s life on Saturday, April 15, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.
