Elsie was born in Mount Kisco, NY, on July 17, 1930. Her younger years were spent with her parents and siblings at the family home in Bedford Hills, NY. She attended and graduated from Bedford Hills High School in 1949. After graduation, she began a career in banking, working for a bank in Mount Kisco, and later for a Chase Manhattan Bank branch in New York City as a teller. In 1975, she retired after her marriage to her late husband, Paul Pettit, with whom she resided mostly in Brookfield. Her husband Paul, who passed away in 2000, was a well-known champion NASCAR driver back in the 1950s.
Elsie and Paul enjoyed going to Florida during the winter months. They subsequently purchased and lived in homes in Lake Worth and Palm City. Both homes were near the ocean, where Paul and Elsie would use their boat to both pleasure boat and fish. After her father passed, Elsie devotedly did much to ensure her mother was assisted and cared for until her passing. Elsie would also take her mother to Florida and care for her.
