Police on Alert After Bear Sighting Near School

DEEP is cautioning CT residents not to approach or try to get closer to a bear to get a photo or video.

BROOKFIELD, CT — Police are on the alert after a bear was spotted in town on yesterday.

Brookfield police alerted schools in the area of Hillandale Road of a bear sighted around 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

“Out of an abundance of caution, a police presence will remain in the area for dismissal time and for middle and elementary school bus drop off,” an alert sent to Brookfield residents said.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) reports that 136 black bears were sighted in Brookfield between Oct. 26, 2017 and Sept. 25, 2018.

DEEP cautions CT residents not to approach or try to get closer to a bear to get a photo or video. If a bear does spot you, don't run or climb a tree. If possible, wait in a vehicle or building until the bear leaves the area.
