Texting and Driving and How It Can Affect You

Hillary Micalizzi answers some questions about texting and driving, in hopes to educate people on just how terrible it is.

For many, Labor day weekend is filled with barbecues and family parties, but not for Hillary Micalizzi. No, Labor Day Weekend 2012, Hillary and her daughter were in a car crash. With 23 year old daughter Lauren in the passenger seat, Hillary was focusing on the road when she saw she was about to be hit; the other driver, distracted by his phone. All she had time to think about was holding her wheel tightly before the other car slammed into the side of her car. Hillary and her daughter were just 2 of the 330,000 people injured from texting and driving accidents every year. They were left with cuts, bruises, and broken ribs, while the other driver was unscathed. Wanting to be anywhere but there, the other driver lied to officers about the reason for the crash, but later confessed to his insurance company about being distracted from his phone while he was driving. Whether that moment changed his life, it sure changed Hillary’s. She tells everyone she can just how important it is to not be distracted while driving. “It may seem like it will only take one second to check your phone, but in one instant you can change the course of not only your life, but your passenger's lives, other driver's or pedestrian's lives. Nothing is worth the risk!,” explained Hillary. And she couldn’t be more correct. No glance is worth a life, which is why when we drive our phones should be off and away so we can drive safely!
