BROOKFIELD -- Greg Waldmiller, who recently died, was a role model for police officers in addressing traffic safety.
During my time covering Brookfield when Waldmiller was on the municipal police force, I interviewed him multiple times for stories previewing the Memorial Day and Thanksgiving week seat-belt wave inspections that the Brookfield Police Department conducted.

He was committed to increasing the use of seat belts, and for motorists not running through red lights along the busy southern corridor of Federal Road.
He kept detailed figures on the behavior of motorists from the pre-tests that were conducted each spring and fall during the seat-belt waves.

Waldmiller also demonstrated public service through leading the drive to install the American flags on the telephone polls through the center of Brookfield. Through the years out-of-town elected officials ranging from former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele of Stamford to former Secretary of the State and current Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz have commented on how impressed they were to see a large display of flags.
