U.S. Air Force Pilot Joseph A Howells, 86, of Brookfield Passed Away

BROOKFIELD, CT — Joseph A Howells, 86 passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at his home in Brookfield CT surrounded by his loving family. Joseph, a long time resident of Brookfield, was the husband of the late Rita C. Howells for 59 years. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, his daughter Joan Marie of Port St. Lucie FL, and brother William of Pensacola, FL. He is survived by his two remaining children, Richard J. Howells of Brookfield CT; and Jeanette S. Howells of Bethlehem PA; his three grand children, Tameika Hudson of Port St. Lucie FL; Franklin Hudson III of Port St. Lucie FL; LaFina Hudson-Widdick of Port St. Lucie; and his three great grand children, Jordan Tounds, William IV, (Liam) Widdick and Vasche Hudson all of Port St. Lucie Fl.

Born on June 30, 1929 in South Philadelphia PA, Joseph was a prominent Electrical Engineer. He was a graduate of Drexel University where he obtained both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in electrical engineering, physics and biomedical engineering. He later obtained his Doctorates degree from California Coast University in Mathematical Modeling and Microprocessor Programming.

Among his many professional achievements Joseph is listed on 11 US patents, was listed in Who's Who in Technology – 1980, 1981, and was the recipient of the Drexel Honor Society – "Man of the Year" award in 1978. After teaching Radar school in the Army, Joseph began his career in 1952 with RCA in Camden New Jersey. In 1963, Joseph was the lead engineer for the installation of computer systems for controlling electric power stations at the Bergan Generating Station in NJ, and at the Moses Niagara Generating Station in NY. Later he invented the first three-dimensional graphics digitizer, which is largely used in the medical field.

Most notably, Joseph designed many portable dictating devices for Dictaphone Corporation and traveled extensively to the orient including Japan and China to oversee manufacturing processes before retiring in 1994. Following his retirement, Joseph taught Physics and Computer Science at Western Connecticut State University and served as an Examination Proctor for MENSA of which he was a 99th percentile member.

As an avid private pilot, Joseph served as an FAA Accident Prevention Counselor and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the United States Air Force, where he taught Radiological Monitoring. In his spare time he enjoyed flying, was a Lionel model train enthusiast and stamp collector.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Saint Joseph Church, Brookfield at a later date and time to be announced.
