We Care 5K in Brookfield Supports Jared Carreras in Fourth Edition

Registration is now open for the race and a majority of the proceeds will go to Jared and his family.

The We Care 5K is returning to Brookfield for the fourth year and will support Jared Carreras, a young Brookfield boy suffering from Hydrocephalus.

The race is organized each year by Brookfield-based Woodbridge Running Company and will be held on April 26.

If you remember, Jared is the little boy for whom his father wrote and sang this beautiful song.

Jared was born with a debilitating brain condition that has left him blind and bound to a wheelchair. Proceeds from the race will go to Carreras’ family to help them purchase a new van that will help them transport young Jared on their various trips to Yale-New Haven Hospital and take him to school.

A portion of the proceeds will also go to Brookfield Cares, a community based organization dedicated to promoting awareness and education by focusing on the impact of substance abuse, depression, suicide, and other public health concerns.

“I’ve been a runner for over 30 years and have participated in so many road races, most of which raised money for a good cause,” Jack Coutts general manager of Woodbridge Running Company said.

Coutts brought the same idea to Brookfield.

Last year, the race provided financial support for the family of Brandon Zenovitch, a young Brookfield resident diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. All race proceeds, which totalled in excess of $8,000 were donated to the Zenovitch family.

“It’s a lot of work,” Coutts said. “But at the end of it all it’s really rewarding, someone who is going through a lot gets to feel special for a couple of days.”
