Boys Track Highlights Big Week in State Championships for Brookfield Sports
Boys Track & Field: Brookfield captured the Class MM State Championship at the track and field meet held in Manchester on Friday. The boys tallied 60 points to edge out second place New London, who had 58 in the 30 team meet. The team was led in the 18 events by Jordan Burandt, who cleared 13-6 to win the pole vault, Kevin Walsh, who had a throwing distance of 171-2 to win the javelin, and the 4x800 relay team who placed first with a time of 8:07.92.

The 4x800 and 4x400 boys relay teams, Pole Vaulter Burandt, Javelin Thrower Walsh, Shot Putter, Javelin and Discus Thrower Ackell and High Jumper Gernert qualified for the 2010 Open Outdoor Track Meet at Veterans Stadium in Willowbrook Park, New Britain, on Monday.
Girls Track & Field: Brookfield tied for 10th place with Branford in the Class MM State Championship track and field meet held in Manchester on Friday. The girls scored 26.12 in the meet, which was won by Hand with a score of 98.2. Claudia Bartoli led the team by placing second in discus with a throw of 107-8 and javelin with a throw of 115-6.

Discus: 2nd — Bartoli 107-8
Javelin: 2nd — Bartoli 115-6
The girls team qualified Wiley in the 1600 meter run, Bartoli and Angela Berardi in the Javelin Throw and Bartoli in the Discus Throw in the 2010 Open Outdoor Track Meet at Veterans Stadium in Willowbrook Park, New Britain, on Monday.
Softball (22-2, 14-2): The 2nd seeded Lady Bobcats won both their first and quarterfinal round Class L State Championship games at home this week.
First they exploded for nine runs over the final three innings to dispatch 6th seeded East Haven (13-10) 10-0 on Wednesday. Senior Stephanie Moss capped the scoring onslaught with a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
Moss came up big for Brookfield again on Thursday when she smacked a two-run triple in the Lady Bobcats tense 2-1 quarterfinal win over Windsor (17-6) on Thursday.
Pitcher Kayla Berardi improved her record to 21-2 on the season by picking up the wins in both games. Berardi allowed only two hits in each game while striking out 10 and 12, respectivley.
The Lady Bobcats will face 6th seed Bristol Eastern (16-4) in the semi-final to be played on Monday in West Haven.
Girls Lacrosse (15-4, 10-3): The Lady Bobcats earned the 7th seed in the Division I State Tournament and a qualifying round bye. That set them up for a first round matchup with 10th seed Norwich Free Academy (13-6) at home on Thursday. Senior Jackie Brown scored a season-high eight goals to lead Brookfield to an impressive 19-10 first round victory. Juniors Kathryn Marron and Emily Leonard each had four goals in the win. The Lady Bobcats will now face 2nd seed New Canaan (14-1) in New Canaan on Monday for the quarterfinal.
Boys Lacrosse (11-7, 8-4): The 8th seeded Bobcats season came to a painful end Thursday as they fell 9-8 at home in sudden death to 9th seeded Avon (10-7, 5-4). A tight back-and-forth game that neither team lead by more than one goal ended at the 39.8 mark of overtime. Senior Travis Pastor led the Bobcats with three goals while fellow seniors Matt Bonavita and Tom Gilligan had two goals apiece. Senior goaltender Mitch Fenton made 17 saves in the loss. All told, Brookfield had 15 seniors end their high school playing careers.
Girls Tennis (9-7): The tennis team suffered a one match loss to Sheehan (12-8) in the qualifying round of the Class M Girls Tennis Championships played at New Canaan on Monday. Mary Petruska and Christina Marconi won their singles matches in straight sets while the team of Kayla Beazer/Mackenzie Morehouse used three sets to win their double match in the 4-3 loss.
Rebecca Vulcano will be playing singles and the team of Kristie Pino/Kerri Lally will be playing doubles in the Girls Tennis Open being held at Yale on Monday.
Golf (9-7, 7-6): Brookfield split the last two rounds of their season, losing to Newtown by two strokes 159-157 and outshooting Oxford 172-187. The team will be playing in the Division II State Championships on Wednesday at Fairview Farms in Harwinton.
