10 Questions With Dave Utecht From Torrington Toyota

Dave Utecht from Torrington Toyota tells Patch how he's preserving the family business and creating a personal relationship with customers.

Torrington Toyota is a small, family-owned and operated car dealership located in Torrington. The business's 25 years of success is proven by their customer loyalty and involvement in the community. Dave Utecht from Torrington Toyota tells Patch how he's making the car-buying process easier for customers and reminisces about one of the most memorable cars he has ever sold.

Patch: Can you tell us a little bit about your background and experience?

Dave: I've grown up in the car business since I was a little kid. At 13 years old, I caught a bad case of Poison Ivy, trying to pull the vines from the old brick building. After college, I spent a year at a software company but always knew I would go into the family business. I have been here ever since.

Patch: If you had to recommend three books what would they be and why?

Dave: The Giver by Lois Lowry. It's a quick read that illuminates the mystery in life nicely.

A Brief History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. He's a great story teller. Written for a laymen, he beautifully explains what science tells us about our reality.

Tell No One by Harlan Coben. Really sharp mystery and one of the best ever written.

Patch: What is your definition of success?

Dave: Doing every thing to your full potential. I always say I would make a terrible plumber, but finding the right vehicle for someone, having happy, thriving employees and making friends with our customers is something I take a lot of pride in.

Patch: What made you pursue a career in auto industry?

Dave: My family started Torrington Toyota in 1992. At the time, I would hear stories from my father on how he co-signed for a customer who was having medical issues. After a year in a corporate environment, I loved going to a fast paced dynamic industry where I can help people. Ever day is different but there is always potential to enrich those around you.

Patch: What services does Torrington Toyota offer?

Dave: We are basically 5 businesses in one. New and used vehicle sales, service, parts and the body shop. If it has to do with a vehicle, we do it.

Patch: What three questions should readers ask when trying to find a reputable car dealer?

Dave: I think an independent voice sometimes brings more credibility. If I was shopping for a car or service, first I would check 3rd party rating sites. What does Google, DealerRater, or Yelp say about them.

Next, I would ask the prior customers. If you are looking for a Camry and you see a Camry in a parking lot ask the person, if they liked the experience and would they buy from them again.

Finally, I would trust my instincts when I am there. Would I let these people at my house? Are they being straightforward? Would I let them watch my kids?

Patch: What is the best piece of business advice you have ever received and who gave it to you?

Dave: The best advice I ever got was to think long term. It came from my father. It's much better to sell a car cheap, but make a friend and have them come back and refer their friends and family, then to over price a vehicle and never see them again. After 24 years in business, we have grown and grown without the need for gimmicks or games.

Patch: What is the most memorable car you have ever sold?

Dave: After selling over 4000 vehicles personally, I can say my favorite sale was a new Corolla. The parents told their daughter that mom was getting a new ride and she was taking mom's old 1996 Corolla to college. They surprised her and the new corolla was for her. Her reaction was priceless.

Patch: What is your favorite aspect about your job?

Dave: Helping people. Hands down. Sometimes people just need a break.

Patch: In your opinion, how does Torrington Toyota standout from the competition?

Dave: I like to think that our customers are part of our family. We don't use impersonal computer programs to prospect. Instead, we know your name and say hi every time we see you. It's a very relaxed environment and we treat everyone with a simple, great deal. Our customer's time and money are important.

Patch: How can readers contact you or learn more about Torrington Toyota?

Dave: I would recommend visiting our website, or call us at 860-482-9496 or email us.

Patch: What is your favorite Toyota commercial?

Dave: Toyota's Prius commercial that features a bank robber using it's quietness and speed to get away is awesome. Most people wouldn't think a hybrid could move like that.
