CANTON, CT — A delegation from Canton High School recently enjoyed a successful experience competing against other schools in the game of science.

Seventeen students from CHS represented their school on April 25 at the Connecticut Science Olympiad state finals at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, placing 16th out of 46 teams and 12th among 29 schools.

The competition marked the program’s third year and its first fielding two teams in the competition.

Canton entered an "A" team of 14 students and a "B" team of three, while 15 students typically comprise a full team.

Schools prepared from September through March for 23 STEM events.

This year’s field included 46 teams from 31 school districts, with 15 schools entering both A and B teams.

Canton earned two medals: a silver (second place) in Entomology by Annie Lynch and Corinne Lynch, and a bronze (third place) in Engineering CAD by Adam Drefs.

The team also posted three additional top-eight finishes: sixth in Electric Vehicle (Hugo Eck and Adam Drefs), sixth in Machines (Adam Drefs and Jayden Lin), and eighth in Experimental Design (Alex Orschel, Lucas Mainville and Marlowe Morgan).

The day’s schedule spanned more than 14 hours, including over six consecutive hours of competition.

Science Olympiad events change each year, with official rules released in September.

This season’s slate included Anatomy & Physiology, Circuit Lab, Materials Science, Hovercraft, Chemistry Lab, Forensics, Astronomy, Code Busters, Forestry, Dynamic Planet, Helicopter and Water Quality, among others.

The team is coached by Canton High School physics teacher Eric Tucker, with assistant coaches Brian Gibbs and Alyssa Mancini.

Support also came from department chair Marsha Mastrocola, technology teacher Brandon Richard, alumni volunteer Carter Gay, and parent volunteers.

Canton’s roster included seniors Marya Lane, Jasmine Allen-Sengupta, Alex Orschel, Lucas Mainville, Mia Whilby, Marlowe Morgan and Jasper Smith; juniors Annie Lynch, Adam Drefs, Davud Mammadov, Shane Leadbetter and Sam Bishop; sophomores Corinne Lynch, Jayden Lin, Fiona Meehan, Victor Pierce and Ben Scott; and freshmen Hugo Eck, Fiona Vaughn, Drew Dauphinais, Gunnar Narowski and Drew Leadbetter.

Looking ahead, the program aims to break into the top five statewide.
