CANTON, CT — Firefighters contained a vehicle fire involving a compressed natural gas-powered sanitation truck in North Canton on Wednesday morning, according to the Canton Fire and EMS Department.

Emergency crews, along with the Canton Police Department, were dispatched to Windmill Lane at approximately 11:30 a.m. following reports of a fire involving a sanitation truck.

Upon arrival, firefighters determined that the vehicle itself—not its contents—was burning.

The truck's driver then informed responders that the vehicle was powered by compressed natural gas, commonly known as CNG, and that the gas line was involved in the fire.

Because the area lacks fire hydrants, Canton officials requested a tanker from the Barkhamsted East Fire Department to assist with water supply operations.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was also notified of the incident.

Fire officials credited the department's daytime fire staff and volunteer firefighters with quickly bringing the blaze under control.

"Water was quickly applied to the fire, allowing crews to contain the incident and prevent further complications," the department said in a statement.

No injuries were reported, and officials did not release information regarding the extent of damage to the vehicle.

The department said the incident highlighted the role of both its volunteer firefighters and daytime paid firefighting program in responding to emergencies throughout the community.

The cause of the vehicle fire was not immediately released.
