CANTON, CT — Canton officials are reminding residents that Connecticut law requires all dogs older than 6 months to be licensed and that annual license renewals are due by June 30.
The licensing period follows the state's fiscal year, running from July 1 through June 30.
While dog licenses can be obtained throughout the year, current licenses must be renewed during June.
According to the Canton Town Clerk's Office, licenses are valid from the date of purchase through the following June 30.
Owners who renew after June 30 will be charged a late fee of $1 per month.
Residents must provide proof of a current rabies vaccination when licensing a dog.
Officials advise owners whose pets need a rabies vaccine or booster shot to contact their veterinarian before renewing a license.
Dog license renewals are handled by mail. Renewal notices are mailed to dog owners each May and include instructions for submitting payment by check or credit card authorization. Completed licenses will be mailed to residents.
For more information, residents can contact the Canton Town Clerk's Office at 860-693-7870.
