Primaries 2026: Who's On Canton's Ballot, What You Need To Know

CANTON, CT — National and state elections are taking place on Nov. 3, but before that big day, the candidate slates must be finalized.

On Tuesday, Aug. 11, Democrats and Republicans will head to the polls for primaries, where registered members of each party will choose who will be on the November ballot.

For example, statewide, Gov. Ned Lamont is being challenged by challenger Josh Elliot for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, so every town's Democrats will be making that decision.

Other hopefuls will also be on the ballot for both parties, depending on the town.

In Canton, candidates will be on the primary ballots on Tuesday, Aug. 11, when polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

They are:

For Democratic governor, voters will choose between:

• Ned Lamont, the party-endorsed candidate and two-term incumbent.
• Josh Elliott.

For Republican U.S. Representative, 5th Congressional District, GOP voters will choose among:

• Chris Shea, the party-endorsed candidate

• Jonathan De Barros

Canton voters will have seven days of early voting ahead of Connecticut's Aug. 11 primary elections.

Early voting will be held Aug. 3 through Aug. 9 at the Canton Community Center, Room B, 40 Dyer Ave.

The upcoming primaries include the Democratic gubernatorial primary and the Republican primary for the 5th Congressional District.

The early voting site will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 3, 5 and 7-9, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 4 and 6.

To vote early, residents must be registered to vote in Canton. Voters must appear in person at the polling place, check in, present identification, and receive the appropriate ballot. After completing their ballot, voters will place it into a secure ballot box.

According to the town, ballots cast during the early voting period will be securely stored in the Town Hall vault until Primary Day.

For those who choose to vote on Election Day, polls will be open Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Canton Community Center. Early voting ballots will also be counted at the polling place on Primary Day.
