CANTON, CT — Two birds found injured along roadways are back in the wild after being treated and rehabilitated at Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton.
The nature center, located at 70 Gracey Road, recently shared the successful releases of an American robin and an Eastern bluebird as part of what it called a "Freedom Friday Double Header."
The robin was found along the side of a road unable to fly and was presumed to have been struck by a vehicle, according to the center.
The bird was treated for a head injury and open wounds.
The Eastern bluebird was also found in a road after being hit by a vehicle.
Its injuries were less severe, with the center reporting a small abrasion on its wrist that healed successfully.
Both birds spent time in Roaring Brook's Songbird Flight Enclosure as they recovered.
Staff used that time to make sure the birds regained the flying and food-finding skills they would need to survive independently.
Once ready, the robin and bluebird were released together.
"Both flew perfectly into the cover of the nearby trees away from the road," the nature center said.
Roaring Brook Nature Center operates an on-site wildlife rehabilitation clinic that cares for hundreds of sick, injured, and orphaned native animals each year, including birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
The goal is to rehabilitate animals sufficiently for their eventual return to the wild.
Animals with permanent injuries that prevent them from surviving independently may remain at the nature center as educational animal ambassadors.
