CANTON, CT — Two Broadway musicals that tell the story of America's founding will take center stage at the Canton Public Library on Thursday, Nov. 5, as the library concludes its America 250 programming series.

The presentation, "From Liberty to Legacy: Exploring American Ideals in the Musicals 1776 and Hamilton," will begin at 6:30 p.m. and feature speaker Michael Langlois.

The program will examine how the musicals 1776 and Hamilton portray the nation's founding and how the eras in which they premiered influenced their interpretations of American history.

Although both productions explore the American Revolution and the country's founding, they present different perspectives on the nation's origins, according to the library.

1776, which premiered in 1969, emerged during a period of significant social and political upheaval in the United States.

Hamilton, which debuted in 2015, arrived amid a different set of national debates about American history, identity, and representation.

Using video clips from both productions, Langlois will examine how the political and cultural concerns of those periods influenced the stories presented on stage.

The discussion will also explore how Americans have continued to reinterpret the country's founding and what those changing narratives reveal about the nation.

The event is part of the library's America 250 series commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026.
