ATV Use May be Banned on Canton Property

Officials may prohibit the use of ATVs, and dirt bikes, on the 19-acre piece of land on Lawton Road.

At a recent meeting the Board of Selectmen authorized town staff to write a policy and bring it back for action this summer. The ban may also be extended to all town-owned property.

There have been complaints of people using ATVs and dirt bikes on the Lawton Road property and police caught a minor using an ATV there recently.

Officers can issue trespassing tickets to people who use dirt bikes or ATVs on the land but Police Chief Christopher Arciero said the policy would give the enforcement “more teeth.”

The town has owned the property since the 1960s, but the land has not been used much.
