Bon Appétit: Canton Library To Host Forum On Julia Child's Iconic Kitchen

CANTON, CT — Home cooks and Julia Child fans can take a behind-the-scenes look at one of America's most famous kitchens during a free virtual author talk hosted by the Canton Public Library.

Paula J. Johnson, a Smithsonian curator and public historian, will discuss her book, "Julia Child's Kitchen: The Design, Tools, Stories, and Legacy of an Iconic Space," during a virtual presentation on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 2 p.m.

Johnson's book explores the story behind Julia Child's legendary 20-by-14-foot kitchen, which served as both a recipe-testing laboratory and the set for many of her cooking demonstrations.

The kitchen has been on display at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., for more than two decades and remains one of the museum's most popular exhibits.

During the online discussion, Johnson will share stories about the more than 1,000 objects that make up the preserved kitchen, including cookware, appliances, utensils, artwork and cookbooks.

The book also features interviews with chefs who knew Child personally, commentary on her favorite culinary tools and historical photographs.

The program is designed for home cooks, food enthusiasts and anyone interested in Child's lasting influence on American cooking and culinary education.

Participants can register online in advance and will have the opportunity to submit questions to the author during the event.

A recording of the program will also be available afterward for those unable to attend live.
