Avon Calls on Past and Present Elected Officials to Be Honored at America 250 Celebration

AVON, Conn. — Avon’s America 250 Coordinating Committee is inviting everyone who has served as an elected official in the Town of Avon—past or present—to come together and be recognized at Avon Honors Those Who Serve, a community celebration of self-government and public service.

The event will be held Saturday, October 17, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Avon Senior Center, 635 West Avon Road, followed by cookies, refreshments and time to visit with friends and former colleagues.

As the nation observes the 250th anniversary of its founding, the program will focus on one of the enduring results of the American Revolution: the opportunity and responsibility of citizens to govern themselves. In Avon, that tradition has depended on generations of residents willing to stand for election, make decisions on behalf of their neighbors and devote their time to public service.

All current and former members of Avon’s elected boards are especially encouraged to attend. During the program, each of Avon’s elected boards will be recognized, and those who have served will be asked to stand so the community can acknowledge their contributions.

The program will also feature a conversation with current and former Town Council chairs, who will share memories of their years in town government, the accomplishments of which they are proud, the difficult decisions they encountered and what they learned about public service.

Just as important, the afternoon will provide an opportunity for former colleagues to see one another again—to sit with people with whom they served, renew old friendships and celebrate the work they accomplished together for Avon.

The event is intended to reach across party lines and generations. Whether you served recently or decades ago, on the Town Council or another elected board, we hope you will come and allow Avon to recognize your service.

Avon Honors Those Who Serve is presented as part of Avon’s America 250 celebration and is sponsored in part by the Avon Democratic Town Committee and Avon Republican Town Committee.

The event is open to the public. Residents, families and students are encouraged to attend and learn more about the people who have helped make local self-government work in Avon.
