Canton Business Featured in USA Today Column

Despite being less than two years old, a Swiss-themed family entertainment destination is attracting national attention.

CANTON, CT — A small Canton business still in its relative infancy is now receiving national attention, due to its inclusion in a feature story in the widest circulated print newspaper in the United States.

USA Today ran a feature Thursday commemorating the 100th anniversary of miniature golf, and among the "10 great miniature golf courses" showcased was Matterhorn Mini Golf in Canton.

Amanda Kulkoski, producer and director of a soon-to-be released documentary on miniature golf entitled Through the Windmill, selected the Swiss-themed Matterhorn as one of her favorites.

"The Heidi hole has you golfing around little goat poop," Kulkoski told USA Today. "My favorite hole is the bobsled track or ski moguls. It's just really fun. You hear a lot of yodeling on the course."

Other courses featured on the USA Today list are in California, Illinois, South Carolina, Wisconsin, New York, Minnesota, Nevada, Tennessee and Georgia.

Matterhorn, which has a unique link to Switzerland on each of its 18 holes, is the creation of owner Autumn Sutherland, who opened the course in 2015.

"Learn about cheese, chocolate and even the Hadron Collider as you putt your way through 18 holes of adventure in Switzerland," the course's web site declares. "Distant yodeling in the background fades in and out as you cover the half-acre course. Come meet our family of goats - each of which was painted by a local school or artist!"

Among the unusual holes is "Roger That," a tribute to tennis great Roger Federer, which features tennis balls and rackets as obstacles on a player's way to the hole.

"It's only our second season, but we're proud to have made a world-class facility providing mini golf that not only lets you work on your putting skills, but to be engaged on many other levels as well," Sutherland said. "Artwork, fun facts, bells to ring, yodels to sing and colorful distractions all abound on our Par 45 course. A big Danke Schon and Merci Beaucoup to all my patrons for making this possible!"

Matterhorn Mini Golf is located at 10 Dyer Cemetery Road, adjacent to Route 44. More information is available by visiting www.matterhornminigolf.com.
