Canton Championship Team Gets Capitol Recognition

The Warriors' girls basketball team was feted at the state Capitol in commemoration of its Class S championship season.

HARTFORD - It wasn't a trip to the White House, but the Canton High School girls basketball team was accorded high honors at the Connecticut state Capitol for its recent Class S championship performance.

State Rep. Tim LeGeyt congratulated the team members on their title victory over Thomaston which delivered the Class S crown.

“It was an honor to host the Canton High School girls basketball team and congratulate them on their big win,” said LeGeyt, who hosted the team and its coaches at the Capitol.

LeGeyt arranged for and joined the team in a visit to the governor’s office, where Gov. Malloy was pleased to receive the players and recognize their accomplishment. LeGeyt also introduced the group in the House of Representatives to fellow legislators, staff, guests, and all those assembled, who gave a warm welcome and congratulatory ovation to the team in honor of their accomplishment.

LeGeyt added, “Canton is very proud of these ladies. I offer my most sincere congratulations to Coach Brian Medeiros, co-captains Emma Sharon, Maggie Treacy, and Carly Atkinson, and all of the players on the girls basketball team on their incredible season and solid victory.”

Canton defeated No. 1 seed and two-time defending champion Thomaston 64-51 to win the title at Mohegan Sun Arena on March 18.
