Canton FD Mourns Passing Of Beloved Retired Chief

CANTON, CT — The Town of Canton Fire & EMS/Canton Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of a beloved, retired fire chief.

Canton firefighters Friday, Feb. 23, announced the recent death of retired Canton Fire Chief Richard "Hutch" Hutchings.

According to the local fire department, Hutchings was a "dedicated member" of the department for more than 46 years, starting in 1977.

"In 1996, Hutchings was appointed as the first chief of department, of the newly formed Town of Canton Fire & EMS," wrote the town.

As the first chief, he was instrumental in the initial strategy to modernize the department.

"Over the years, Hutch would step up in the department's time of need in the rank of chief of department again, and other various command staff roles," wrote the CFD.

Local fire officials said "Hutch" had a "strong passion for continued fire service education, and training throughout his years of service."

The nearby Avon Volunteer Fire Department also paid tribute to Hutchings' passing.

Wrote the AVFD via Facebook:

"The Avon Volunteer Fire Department would like to extend our utmost profound condolences and sympathies to the family and Canton Fire and EMS of Retired Chief Richard 'Hutch' Hutchings.

"Chief Hutchings was a dedicated member of Canton Fire and EMS and part of the nursing profession. Those who knew Hutch would describe him as a man of strong convictions, and exemplary leadership, with a passion for fire and EMS.

"Rest in Peace Chief Hutchings, thank you for your service and guidance throughout the years."
