Canton FD Remembers Fallen Member Killed 36 Years Ago

CANTON, CT — Wednesday, July 12, is always a somber day for the Canton Volunteer Fire Deparatment and EMS.

On July 12, 1987, the department suffered a line-of-duty death when Arthur "Art" Vincent was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by a drunk teenager.

Vincent, a fire policeman, was on traffic duty at a training drill in town on Route 44 when he was hit and, later, died at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford.

On Wednesday, the 36th anniversary of that tragic accident, the CVFD posted a tribute and photo of Vincent doing his duty for the town.

In addition to serving his town's fire department for many years, Vincent served his country in World War II, serving in Europe with the U.S. Army Air Corp.

"His line of duty death reminds us all of the selfless service and sacrifice that our members are committed to every day," wrote the CVFD on Wednesday. "We honor Arthur Vincent on this meaningful day."
