Canton Nature Center Ramps Up Outdoor Activities
The Roaring Brook Nature Center is hosting two special, late-winter hikes Friday and Saturday as it prepares for the changing of the season.
CANTON, CT — With Mother Nature soon to be turning a new page on the seasons, the Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton is ramping up more outdoor activities.
On Friday and Saturday, the center — located at 70 Gracey Road, Canton — will host special outdoor events on its trails as it looks for signs of spring, which officially starts next week.
• On Friday, March 14, the center is hosting a special "Under the Sap Moon Hike " from 7 to 8:45 p.m.

This will be a guided walk on center grounds under a full moon.
"This moon was known to Native Americans as the full 'Sap' moon as it marks the time when maple sap begins to flow and the annual tapping of maple trees begins," wrote the center.

The cost is $11 per person or $16 for a family, with registration required.
Guests are asked to bring a flashlight.
• The next day, Saturday, March 15, the center is teaming up with the Town of Canton for a special "Signs of Spring Hike" that is free for Canton residents.
It will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
"As winter loosens its grip, nature begins to stir," wrote the center. "Join us for a family-friendly hike to search for the first signs of spring in Werner’s Woods. From budding trees and emerging seedlings to bird songs and animal tracks, we’ll explore how nature awakens after the long winter."
Registration is required for the program, which is being funded by the Canton Youth Services Bureau.
