Canton Obituary: Janet Smith, 86

Condolences to her family and friends.

Janet W. Smith, 86, of Canton and formerly Farmington, died Thursday, November 3, 2016.

Born in Hartford, the daughter of the late Tracy and Lillian (MacDonald) Smith, she grew up in West Hartford and moved to New York and New Jersey pursing her career as an executive secretary. She graduated from Kingswood-Oxford in West Hartford and Elmira College in Elmira, NY.

Throughout her life, Janet pursued her love of learning, attending conferences and classes. Janet began her career working for an editor at The NY Times, for the former Ambassador George Keenan at the Institute for Advance Studies in Princeton, George Lamb at the Rockefeller Foundation, the General Counsel at Boston University, the retired President of Cigna, and retired from Halloran and Sage in Hartford.

Janet had a passion for politics and foreign policy. She was very active on the World Affairs Council in Hartford and volunteered countless hours at UConn Hospital.

She is survived by her two nieces, Charlotte Landgren and her husband David of Unionville, Jennifer Cook and her husband Larry of Cheshire; her great nieces and nephews, Jamie Grove of LA, Jared Landgren of CT, Jessica Cook of AZ, Tanner Cook of MO, her beloved cousins Ursula MacDonald of NJ, Christopher MacDonald of WA, Gabrielle Uchno and her family of NJ, Veronica Ditko and her family of NJ.

A heartfelt thank you to the amazing staff of the ICU department and 3rd floor at UConn Hospital. They made her final days very peaceful.

A private burial will be held for her family.
