Canton Outlines Process To Determine Your Taxes

The Town of Canton is in the midst of town/school budget deliberations and taxpayers are invited to follow along.

CANTON, CT — If you want to know how the town crafts a spending plan that, ultimately, determines how much cash you have to fork over in taxes, there's a document just for you.

The Town of Canton recently posted a two-page schedule that not only lists the secondary meetings when it comes to municipal budget deliberations but also when that budget will be decided.

Without naming every meeting planned this winter/spring, the town plans to conduct major budget presentations on the town and school budgets on Monday, March 18, and Wednesday, March 20, respectively.

Then the Canton Board of Finance will host a public hearing on Monday, April 22, with a vote on the budget in early May.

Before that, various boards and subcommittees will conduct budget deliberation meetings — all of them listed.

The final step, however, comes in July when taxpayers have to write a check to the local tax collector, something that is very dependent on what's approved by the town and its voters.
