Keep Your Eyes On Road, Not Your Phone: Canton PD

CANTON, CT — Motorists cruising through Canton better keep their eyes on the road.

Because if they look down at their cellphone, there's a good chance the Canton Police Department will see them.

Canton police Monday said they're on the lookout for distracted drivers, part of a state and national enforcement campaign that starts this week.

"The Canton Police will be participating in the State of Connecticut Distracted Driving Enforcement Campaign, which will run through the next two weeks of October," wrote the CPD. "As always, please drive safe and be sure to put down your phone."

The effort is part of the state and country's well-known "U Drive. U Text. U Pay," campaign.

According to the CPD, Connecticut law prohibits the use of any hand-held mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle.

Drivers who are 16 or 17 years of age can't even use a cell phone or mobile device at any time, even with a hands-free accessory.

Getting caught can be costly, according to local and state law enforcers.

Violating Connecticut’s distracted driving laws can be fined $200 for the first offense, $375 for the second offense and $625 for the third and subsequent offenses.

But that is, often, better than the biggest price ... your life.
